Conquering BrokeButt....

So after yoga class and other miscellaneous errands, Supa had a few hours before she had to pick up the Pooch from her beautification appointment. (She was also Ruff Ryder free this weekend - yeaaahhhhh!) So, not wanting to go home for fear she'd stuff her face then relax and not want to leave the pad again, Supa decided to roll the dice, and go to the movies - and simply told herself that whatever movie worked into her location and time frame, that would be the one she'd see.

And wouldn't you fucking know it. Was it 16 Blocks? No. Tsotsi? NOPE. Da Block Party? Negative!!! Brokeback Mountain was the only one which fit into the required location/time allotment.

Sigh. Supa decided to conquer the Broke Butt.

And let me say this, I'm glad I was rolling solo, because rest assured, had it been a community decision, the Supa Friends (guy friends specifically) would've cursed me out at the mere BrokeButt suggestion, then punked me into either (a) not going, or (b) seeing another flic. So in essence, this was probably the best scenario. Sneaking off in secrecy....

So lemme make this quick....

I walked into the movie about 10-15 minutes late, but wasn't trippin' because I seriously doubted they'd be playing hide the sausage so soon. Then, soon as I sat down, I suddenly remembered that I really hate country music. (the movie's full of it) It just 'aint Supa's cup o'tea. Too twangy and redneck-esque. All the line dancing, cowboy hats, rodeos, twangy guitars and shit almost got me the heck up outta there. (Supa needs a BEAT.... )

And oh yeah - it's a long ass movie. (2 hrs & change) I got antsy, because the beginning and middle were really MEH. Very MEH. The cinemetography was cool, if you like mountains and streams and pine trees and sheep herds and snow and that kinda shit. (meh) The sex scene (only one) was what I thought it'd be - two grown ass hairy men tussling around a tent in the wilderness, with a lot of heavy breathing and grunting and stuff. I had an expression of sheer disgust on my face, but no dry heaving. Truthfully, I was kinda bored. I ALMOST walked out. But the last 1/4th of the film was the payoff of the first very mediocre 3/4th.

I won't get into the love affair of these two dudes, and I won't even try to figure out if they're gay or bi or whatever. But Heath Ledger gave an astounding performance, I will say that. So did the two wives of the down-low husbands. (Anne Hathaway, Michelle Williams) Jake Glyyllennhaaall's performance was pretty good, too.

Yes, (when you get beyond the gay factor) it was a pretty ordinary love story - and anyone who's ever had that connection with a certain someone, which goes beyond anything you can logically explain, when that person becomes imprinted on your soul and no matter what either of you tries to do, the feelings and yearning and desires simply will not go away - then you will relate. If you've never experienced that, well, then never mind. You won't know what the hell I'm talking about.

Ultimately, this movie portrays the unhappiness, pain, longing, and tragedy which can come along with not living your authentic life - the life that is true for you - regardless of what society, religion, community, parents, friends, wives, husbands, children think. And how when you choose (for whatever reason) to give in and pretend, how it compromises your soul, and how this can have painful effects for self and the people in your life.

So, yeah. Glad that's over with. Now I REALLY need some weed.

PS - Supa's all-time favorite cowboy flic is still Unforgiven.

Thanks for the Brokeass movie review. I refuse to go see it. And not because it's about gay men. I don't have a problem with gay men, lesbians on the other hand...

Anywho, I won't go see it because the whole fact that the two guys get married. And then proceed to cheat on their wives. Okay, I know it happens but still, it's not my kind of love story.

i've avoided this flick for a number of reasons. chief amongst them is the country/cowboy angle. that went out with the bath water. ok not hating but who wants to see two men. now if it was two women ... lol chill, just kidding.

yup you need to roll. always get the ladies to roll. tighter and burns deeper. god i sound like a fucking stoner!

Glad for the review. If I'm going to be honest, I have to admit that I still have some resistance about the relationships, but what you said about "living your authentic life" hit home. Makes me want to see the movie just as a love story.

Re: "certain someone, which goes beyond anything you can logically explain, when that person becomes imprinted on your soul and no matter what either of you tries to do, the feelings and yearning and desires simply will not go away. . . can't be explained to someone who hasn't been through it.

I would liken it to having an orgasm, if you've never had one, you can't explain it to someone who has not.

Not that this has anything to do with anything, but that stuck out to me in your statement. So, I decided to use an orgasm as an analogy.

Yeah, I agree with Mwabi. Gets some stuff already and stop trippin'...LOL

Thanks for the review. BTW, did you see that Tsotsisp?) won foreign language film. The director's acceptance speech was awesome (sorry - WG word...I'm at work)!

He was biggin up Africa - and the movie's two leads, who were not allowed on the stage - time and time again.

I love non-Americans...they're so f#cking humble!

now that the oscar hype is over, maybe i can see it. but there was too much pressure before to think that it was great. i like both country music and cowboys, but i'm still not certain this is my cup of tea.

Did you happen to catch the montage during the Oscars where they showed a bunch of "no homo" clips that show how gay classic Western flicks were? Hilarious.

Not gon be able to der it.

No.
Homo.

If it was 2 minutes long.

Country music? That's the nay-no.

Plus I already know cowboys are boring as hell. Shit, I live in Dallas...just down the road from Cowboy Town Fort Worth!! lol
