Fellow headz:
Is there anyone you feel does not belong on the list?
Belong on the list, but for a different album?
Who are some honorable mentions that aren't on the list?
Any new-school additions? (a la Kanye)

Some I think could belong on the top twenty list: De La Soul (3 Feet High & Rising), A Tribe Called Quest (Low End Theory), Mos Def (Black on Both Sides), Wu-Tang Clan (36 Chambers), Outkast (Aquemini), Lauryn (Miseducation), Common (Like Water for Chocolate), there's more...

Outkast gets an honorable mention for "Aquemini" and not "ATAliens?"....
What about the D.O.C. and "No One Can Do It Better?"
I'mma stop. This list is impossible...

Sup:

Although this is an EXCELLENT Post, this post is wayyy too stressful! How am I supposed to narrow down all the beauties from back in the day!

Big ups to: Illmatic, The Chronic, Raising Hell, Elif 4 Zaggin (hehe) Death Certificate, ALL that. . .

They are just hell bent on putting Jay-Z somewhere on there.

Geez.

I vote for as well. Hot, Cool, and Vicious by Salt N Pepa.

I don't care how they line them up--I lay it out on my personal CD track based on how I felt. Public Enemy was my stomping music, and the rest well they held their place firmly on my CD rack, too. Supa you sure know how to take a brotha back. That's a serious ridin' mix MP3 right thur!!!

I would add
Nas - It Was Written
Fugees - The Score
Blackstar - Blackstar

A.u.n.t. Jackie said...

Oohh Blackstar for sure, and as for Jay Z I would go The Dynasty with Kanye's first track and the early Neptunes tracks.

don't front on the Beastie Boys Licensed to Ill...Paul Revere changed my life!

I don't know how I feel about NWA, except for The Boyz in the Hood!

I don't think the list is complete without the Fugees, but that's just me. I could certainly lose Nas for the Fugees, if not Jay Z!

But I'm no Hip Hop head this is just what I like!

Supa said...

DANG how could I forget the FUGEES?!! I'm trippin'!!

Thanks Glam & Epsilonicus!

Roxanne Shante < remember her and the "Real Roxanne" used to battle rap LOL.

A.u.n.t. Jackie said...

ooh Biz Markie!

He actually made a better DJ than he did a rapper to me. damn I can remember parties that I he spun at that I danced so hard I literally thought I was gonna hurt somebody...can't get off the dance floor, every song is my favorite song kinda hurt somebody!

damn! I still need to go dancing!

Supa said...

I came in the door/I said it before/I never let the mic magnitize me no more/
But it's biting me, fighting me, inviting me to rhyme
I can't hold it back, I'm looking for the line...

Supa...I am new to your site and love it. Keep up the good work.

I am a true old head from Brooklyn. I grew up listening to Hip hop. I lived the beginning to now.

Let me just say that there is NO LIST without Criminal Minded by Boogie Down Productions. That album was and is, one of the greatest of all times. KRS-one is a great MC and that album ended the career of MC Shan. PERIOD.

In addition.....where is BIG DADDY KANE? You have got to be kidding me? Kane is one of the greatest and a master at performing live.

And I agree that Lauryn Hill, the Miseducation...is one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time.

I could go on all day....

KRS-One has two, not one, TWO albums that could both be on this list, Criminal Minded and By All Means Necessary. To leave him off completely is a travesty.

But hey, what's a hip-hop top ten without Tupac and Biggie, right?

How the fuck you gon' leave Quest off the fuckin' list? The Low End Theory?

Like Water For Chocolate is THE most underrated hip-hop album on earth. Common and J-Dilla did that shit.

Great list Supa, but I think the wrong Run DMC album is in there! Their self-titled debut album and King of Rock were both groundbreaking. And what about Criminal Minded, By All Means Necessary) and Radio?

Skinnyman said...

oh yeah, and Doggystyle

Supa said...

Okay beautiful people - this is not MY list, it's MTV's list!!!

Maybe I'll do an update with my own pics, but I agree - a TOP TEN is just too hard to configure, I think it should be TOP 20 to it justice.

I would definitely add CRIMINAL MINDED or BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY, LOW END THEORY, MISEDUCATION, etc.

Almost thought about including Doggystyle - but it fell just *thismuch* short...

And, I'm SURE I'm biased, but THE CHRONIC would hold the #1 spot for me.

Joel Randell said...

good list here supa. one of the more original lists i've seen, therefore i wouldn't change a thing. everyone on there is valid.

your blog is dope! i'm mos def linking you this weekend . . .
